Why Verizon Wireless Sucks

motokochan | 20 January, 2007 22:09

I was reading an article the other day about a problem a customer was having with a company. One of the comments was interesting. The commenter wrote that it is rare to see words written about when someone is having no problems with a company, only when there are problems. Sadly, it is very true.

This was going to be a single post, but it is too big. History will be on this part, the positive stuff will be in the next post. For background, I've seen cell phones evolve from huge units that were a pain to carry, to the slim little things we know today. The first cell phone I have experience with is the "California Mobile Phone" which is basically a DynaTAC 8000X with a fancy name (and lower price). The service was from LA Cellular (later AT&T Wireless, then Cingular, and now AT&T). It was an awesome phone for the time, and since service was so expensive, it was mostly there for emergency use.

Later on, LA Cellular changed. They got big, and started being less friendly. Customer service was basically abandoned. Since there were newer and better plans and phones, it was time to look around. PacTel Wireless had changed its name to Airtouch and was running some clever ads at the time (remember the blind spokesperson Ricky?). Their plans were much better than LA Cellular, and the phones were also a bit cheaper, so they were chosen.

Airtouch was a great company, very friendly people on support, and their coverage was quite good for the time. In fact, just doing a bit of phone switching, I was using an analog handset until about 2004. Of course, the digital revolution was sweeping through the cell market and analog was being abandoned.

By this time Airtouch had become Verizon Wireless, and it was rather funny having a phone with the Airtouch logo long after that name was gone. Anyway, I began to use the cell phone for more than just emergencies, and the short battery life and high plan cost was a big problem. Since analog coverage was becoming non-existent, I decided to upgrade. So, a call to Verizon Wireless, and a shiny Motorola v60s was on its way to me.

It was a great phone with decent battery life and good sound. Only there was one problem. Where before I had decent analog reception (if sketchy availability of an open circuit), I had no reception at home or at the office. This rather defeated the purpose of having a call phone since the main locations I might think to use it didn't have coverage. Calls to customer service for other items when I needed help proved to be frustrating at the best.

After dealing with the two-year contract, I decided to look at other options. Sprint was rather expensive and Cingular scared me with tales of constant billing problems. T-Mobile was the other major choice, and after looking at a few sources, decided they were worth a try. I especially liked their coverage maps with street-level zoom, which confirmed they had at least decent coverage where I wanted it.

So, I moved to T-Mobile, but I was still wondering if I should have stayed with Verizon Wireless, as I knew them and at least had some expectations. The last interaction I had with them however convinced me to never go back.

I called customer service to confirm my account had been canceled when my old number was ported. The rep I talked to was very hostile (since they did lose my business), and after I confirmed the cancelation, told me that when I realized I made the wrong choice I'd be sorry for leaving them.

Now, this could be a one-off thing, but my previous experience with their customer service leads me to think it wasn't. Now, I do a lot of work with customers at the office, especially support, and it can be very frustrating at times. I realize that so I try to be nice and understanding when I am on the other side. The one thing I do know though is you don't ever insult the customer, and you especially don't tell them they are stupid or made a bad decision. At least, you don't tell them flatly. They are paying you for help, and as long as it is in your scope, you try to handle it as best as you can. Being rude is a sure way to lose a customer to the competition, and it certainly worked for me. I will never use Verizon Wireless, and I now warn others who might be considering them about how they treated me.

Next post will be on why I like T-Mobile and what I think Verizon Wireless could learn from them.

Verizon Wireless DOES suck. I worked for them from 2000 to 2003, and I know they suck. Their training is fine, but it gets piss-poor when a rep hit the call center and more questions develop. Then, the decision-makers always make the easiest decision and put all burdens on the customer care reps, irritating the customers and letting the reps take the abuse. In short, they have set themselves up for failure, and have to spend so much on training because they lose reps all of the time. They are a ship struggling to stay afloat, to be honest. I know this from the inside. T-Mobile has been better for me, too. I put up a blog post just like this one, explaining the inner working of why it sucks.

Verizon Sucks

Aggravated Verizon cust | 01/03/2007, 19:58

I just had a very bad experience with Verizon wirless myself. Rude, and Passive agressive customer care representatives.

Ask for Kathi Avery at extension 5837. She was the worst of the customer care people i dealt with and she was supposedly a manager.

"They are a ship struggling to stay afloat, to be honest. I know this from the inside."

Haha.. thats why they are the biggest right now and have led the industry in the lowest churn rate for 2 years straight. 2006 was a record profit year. Your an idiot.

Verizon Wireless

Mark H | 02/05/2007, 17:00

Verizon pretty much has a monopoly in my area. I try 2 tell my friends they are bad but they dont listen. I just cant wait until they call tech support and see that im right.

Now now, be nice guys. I don't want nasty comments on this topic.

Churn rates aren't everything. You can suck and still have low churn if your customers have to use you (as I currently must with my work phone), or if they are the only ones with decent coverage in your area.

Profits also don't mean much. Maybe your margins are better, or other companies are eating their margins to gain a base.

Mark H, Verizon and Verizon Wireless are two different companies (well, kinda... Verizon owns 55% of VZW). ILECs suck in general usually, mostly because they have a monopoly and it doesn't matter how they treat you since you can't really switch.

It like that with everything. In life we take more note of the bad things then good things.
Just watch the news 9~ bad things against 1~ happy thing.

Verizon SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Cybergeek2021 | 02/07/2007, 22:17

You are right. I have Verizon Wireless and here in Michigan they have good signal but bad customer care. Another reason why I hate Verizon's guts is because the phones are locked to the point of no return, I meen you cant even have a picture on your external display! I meen isent that what it is there for?!?!? I cant wait until my contract so I can try AT&T and possibly get an iPhone

Check the coverage when you switch providers and make sure you have time to do so and return if there is a problem. For example, AT&T has worse coverage where I am than Verizon Wireless. Only T-Mobile has decent coverage (they have a tower at the end of the street).

I live in the foothills of California, so getting signals is tricky in general.

gtron | 03/11/2007, 18:29

i like verizon compared to sprint/nextel anyway. i've never had a problem with verizon but i must say they if they made new hardware technology a bit more of a priority that would be dope.

Verizon wireless SODOMIZED ME...

Graham | 27/11/2007, 09:37

They suck because I was a customer, unknowingly signed a two year agreement. It was two years of absolute hell. Abusive CSR's, Supervisors that laughed at me while I talked to them and they talked to other epople while I was explaining the issue's. THEY F'ING SUCK. SO I got to the end of my contract, and called two days after it was up, and told the CSR to disconnect my line, He said "No problem" they will pro-rate it and send you a new bill. Well I got the new 127 dollar bill (my contract was 79.99/mo. and I never went over my minutes) So I called back and they said, Oh no you never disconnected your line until you were 27 days into the cycle??? They should have said, no we never disconnected the line until we felt like it, and now you OWE US. Too bad the terrorists don't focus on verizon instead of the USA. dont get me wrong, I love our country, but Verizon, gets you, corners you, and sodomizes you. Then asks you if you want some more.

Verizon wants your money

Ros Rodriguez | 30/11/2007, 05:05

Verizon wireless just wants your money, period. Because they are so big they careless about customer service. They have suspended my service 3 times in 3 month for not reason. I pay direct from my bank online system, but if they do not post it, they suspend the service, period. You have to show proof of payment before getting the service back within 48 hours and never getting an apology. They want to get into your bank account to charge at their will, period. Customer service sucks, web site sucks. AT&T is the option but they want your money before you go, period.

Verizon blows!

Mike Richards | 30/12/2007, 11:34

All I had was dropped calls with Verizon. If the calls didn't drop the calls were static as hell. I was trying to get my contract canclled when CS rep Leslie H. told me to shut up and get a life. She then hung up. I called back and asked for that bitch, but they wouldn't connect me to her. I decided since I wasn't getting anywhere over the phone I would go to a store. I went in and calmly explained my problem. They offered me a new phone, saying my current phone was the problem. I had already been through 3 different phones and had the same problem with all 3 of them. I flatly told them I want my service cancelled. They told me I was making the wrong choice and the AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile are inferior to Verizon. I told them I did not care what they said, I want my service cancelled. The person once again asked if I was sure. I then raised my voice and told them to cancel my service now. They finally cancelled it. I left the store and went and got a Pantech Duo at AT&T. I have had no problems with AT&T. I've been having crystal clear calls and no dropped calls. I also contacted the BBB over Verizon's CS. DO NOT USE VERIZON!

Verizon does in fact suck ass

Brandon | 01/01/2008, 03:12

Well...what can i say. Verizon has caused me nothing but trouble. First of all, a rep lied to me and told me i could get vcast in my area (btw i didn't get a month free for some fucking reason). So right there $15 was wasted. I barely get service anywhere around where i live and the coverage maps say i should be getting fine service. I have been putting up with this shit for a little over a year and i have a 2 year contract. I'm pretty sure i can't take it much longer, so i'm probably gonna cancel that shit. And if a rep gets an attitude with me, i'm just gonna simply say "FUCK YOU, CANCEL THIS SHIT NOW". I have a friend that has t-mobile and he never has trouble with it. So thats probably what i'll end up getting.

Verizon Wireless 30 Day Guarantee

Ernst Collins | 24/01/2008, 10:14

There 30 day guarantee, is miss-leading. It says in another place that you will have all charges refunded if you chose to go to another carrier. What they MEAN is that you pay if you do not. It should be worded, if you swithch over to another carrier. But it does not. What this means is if you just drop the service under thirty days you still get an invoice for a lot of " incidentals ". I signed on for a "NO RISK" thirty day trial and wound up getting a bill they deem legal for 80 dollars!. The account was supposed to be a 450 min basic account! There is no argument with them concerning the closure of the account under thirty days or the return of the phone. No one told me when I closed the account that if I did it I would receive a bill if I did not switch before that to another account! BEWARE - there is much more to tell. None of it good.

Verizon is scum

Maureen Clark | 25/01/2008, 21:13

If you cancel Vcast be sure to tell them to block it on your phone. When you cancel they lie to you and say it can't be blocked.

Verizon Wireless Unethical

Kurt | 05/02/2008, 17:53

People be nice; just keep spreading the word; plain and simple..this company is unethical. I wish there was a higher authority for punishment, but that's all big business money buying the right kind of people/organizations. Pay the bill for services not rendered and never go back.

Re: Why Verizon Wireless Sucks

Motoko-chan | 09/02/2008, 10:28

motokochan

Kurt, you shouldn't have to take that kind of punishment. If they are being deceptive on billing, contact your state's attorney general and file a complaint. The more that people complain, the more likely there is to be a case taken against the company.

You should also contact the local Better Business Bureau. Although the BBB itself can't do much, VZW will often address complaints through them.

Re: Verizon Wireless Unethical

Sorrel Jakins | 15/02/2008, 14:37

There is a higher authority: the Federal Communications Commission. Go to http://fcc.gov and click on 'contacting the FCC' and tell them why Verizon does not deserve a broadcasters licence.

FROM THE INSIDE- WHY VERIZON WIRELESS SUCKS

marie | 20/02/2008, 15:20

WELL, FOR ALL OF YOU THAT DOESNT UNDERSTAND WHY VZW SUCKS LET ME GIVE YOU ALL THE INSIDE SCOOP.
REASON # 1- LACK OF TRAINING
VERIZON WIRLESS LOVES TO SELL THEMSLEVES TO UNKNOWING PEOPLE IN SEARCH OF JOBS USING THE SELLING POINTS OF BONUS AND 401 K MATCHES. PRETTY APPEALING IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO START YOUR CARRER. WHAT YOU FIND OUT LATER IS THAT THERE IS ACTUALLY NO ROOM FOR GROWTH AS THEY LIE ABOUT. ACTUALLY, PEOPLE THERE ARE SO TIRED OF THERE UNEDUCATED, GHETTO, UNPROFESSIONAL SUPERVISRORS THAT THE REPS CONSTANTLY POST FOR JOBS THAT ARE NOT EVEN ENOUGH SPOTS TO FILL..THE MORAL IS SOO LOW THAT IN THE BEGGINIG OF EVERY YEAR REPS USE ALOMOST ALL OF THE VACATION TIME SINCE THEY WERE UNABLE TO TAKE ANY TIME OFF THE END IF THE PREVIOUS YEAR. I HAVE NEVER WORKED FOR A PLACE THAT INTENTIONALLY HIRES THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL WORKERS SINCE THEY KNOW THESE TYPES WILL ALLOW PEOPLE TO DISREPSECT THEM WHENEVER THEY WANT TO AND THESE TYPES WILL NOT SPEAK UP FOR THEMSLEVES. YOUR SUPERVISOR IS NOT A DEGREE HOLDING RESPECTABLE EMPLOYEE RATHER A FRIEND OF A HIGHER UP WHO IS MORE THAN LIKELY SLEPPING WITH ALL OF THE TRASH THEY THEY HIRE( USUALLY MALE ON MALE). ( AND I HAVE HAD MANY JOBS) IF U WOULD LIKE NAMES LET ME KNOW.
#2- SCARED OF REAL POTENTIAL
FORGET WORKING YOUR WAY TO THE TOP. UNLESS YOU ARE HIRED AT A CERTAIN LEVEL, KISS THE UPPER RANKINGS GOODBYE. NOW IF YOU LIKE TO MAKE FRIENDS AND YOU ONLY GO TO WORK TO BE MAKE FRIENDS ( LIKE UR IN HIGHSCHOOL) THEN THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU)BUT IF YOU ARE PROFESSIONAL AND CARRY YOURSELF AS SUCH. DO NOT WORK THERE. UNLESS YOU JUST NEED 2 PAYCHECKS. THEN QUIT.
#3 HR DOES NOT EXIST
IF YOU EVEN THINK YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CALL SOMEONE TO ASSIST YOU IN A MATTER INVOLVING ANYONE. YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF CALLING YOUR MAMA. I AND PREVIUOS EMPLOYEES HAVE SENT EMAILS FOR ASSISTANCE USUALLY FOR HARRASEMENT FROM YOUR GHETTO LACKING DEGREE "SUPERIORS". FOR THEM TO RESPOND 3 WEEKS LATER AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN TARGETED AS A "PROBLEM EMPLOYEE". WHICH MEANS YOUR BATHROOM BREAKS, ANYTIME YOU MUST TAKE A PHONE CALL, OR WHEN YOU MAY TURN AROUND TO SAY HELLO TO SOMEONE IS DOCUMENTED IN YOUR MEANINGLESS FILE WHICH WILL AFFECT YOUR BONUS.
#4- PLAYING WITH THE MONEY YOU WORK HARD FOR.
IF THIS COMPANY DOES WANT TO OFFER THESE INCENTIVES THEN JUST DONT. (BUT THEY HAVE TO. WHY ELSE WOULD SOMEONE START AT 15 AN HOUR WITHOUT THESE INCENTIVES) COME NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER OF EVERY YEAR ITS TIME TO DUCK YOUR HEAD. THERE ARE NUMEROUS FIRINGS OF EMPLOYEES FOR FRIVOLOUS REASONS. SO YOU WILL NOT HAVE A BONUS TO RECIEVE THE FOLLOWING APRIL SINCE YOU ARE NOW UNEMPLOYED BUT SINCE THIS IS AN AT WILL STATE YOU HAVE NO LEG TO STAND ON. REMEMBER HR ONLY HIRES, NOT GO TO BAT FOR THERE EMPLOYEES. DID I TELL YOU ALL THERE IS NO UNION FOR WIRELESS? LANDLINE YES, WIRELESS NO. THERE WAS AN EMPLOYEE FIRED THAT HR WAS NOT EVEN PRESENT AT. AND WHEN HE ASKED TO SPEAK TO THEM, ONE OF THESE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL "SUPERVISORS"RESPONDED" YOU DONT NEED HR". HR DID NOT CALL BACK LATER EITHER. YOU CAN KISS UNEMPLOYMENT GOODBYE. VERIZON WIRELESS HAS FOUGHT TOOTH AND NAIL TO DENY EVERYONE. EVEN THOUGH MOST ARE NOT FIRED FOR GROSS MISCONDUCT. USUALLY FOR TIME MISUSE.
#5 NO UNION
AT OTHER COMPANIES NOT HAVING A UNION IS OK. BUT HAVING A UNION IS SPOKE OF SO BADLY THAT YOU ARE AFRAID TO SIGN UO FOR IT. HR AND YOUR SUPERVISOR WILL NOT EVEN DISCUSS ANY OF YOUR ISSUES IF YOU DO REQUIRE UNION REPRESTATION. YOU WILL BE BLACK BALLED.
#6 RAISES ARE NOT WORK BASED
I KNOW OF OTHER SITUATIONS WHERE THEY WERE PUT ON A DEVELOPING REVIEW EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO WRITE UP,COACHINGS, OR ANYTHING IN THE FILE. ONE OF THE UNEDUCATED DEGREE LACKING "SUPERVISORS" DECIDES TO PLACE YOU AT ANY CATEGORY OF PERFORMANCE THEY WANT TO BECAUSE THEY SUPPORT THERE OWN. THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS USUALLY DONT GO AGAINST PEOPLE THEY HAVE PLACED IN THAT POSTION. AGAIN YOU HAVE NO SUPPORT. USUALLY THESE PATHETIC INDIVUALS GIVE 5 YEARS OF THER LIFE TO MAKE ABOUT 50K. (BUT WHEN UR UNEDUCATED WHAT ELSE CAN U DO) PLEASE DONT THINK YOU WILL WIZ UP THE CORPORATE LADDER UNLESS YOU HAVE 6 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE TO GIVE THEM. ( SAD ISNT IT) I HAVE NOT KNOW OF ANY CALL CENTER SUPERVISOR BEING PROMOTED TO THAT POSITION WITHIN 2 YEARS. MIND YOU, YOUR SUPERVISORY SKILLS INVOLVE TIME SHEETS, APPROVAL, MONTHLY BS MEETINGS AND GETTING AN ESCALTED EMAIL. WHICH WILL BE ROUTED BACK TO THE REP.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO KNOW...I COULD GO ON BUT I DONT HAVE THE TIME...
SO YOU ALL CAN GO ON GIVING MONEY TO A COMPANY SUCH AS THIS. ME PERSONALLY, DONT HAVE A VERIZON WIRLESS PHONE, INTERNET OR CABLE. I REFUSE TO SUPPORT THEM IN ANYWAY. AND IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE BRAIN DEAD IDIOTS THAT THINK I AM JUST A BITTER EX EMPLOYEE. NONE OF THESE THINGS HAPPENED TO ME PERSONALLY BUT ALMOST ALL THE EMPLOYESS I HAVE COME IN CONTACT WITH HAVE HAD ONE OF THE ABOVE EXPERINCES. I MOVED ON VOLUNTARLITY ONCE I REALIZED I WAS WASTING MY LIFE AT A DEAD END JOB (NOT CARRER) IF YOU DO DECIDE TO WORK THERE MAKE SURE YOU DEGREED AND WILL STRAIGHT TO I.T. OR UPPER MANAGEMENT. DO NOT START OFF ENTRY LEVEL , U WILL REGRET ALL THE TIME YOU HAVE PUT IN....SO THE NEXT TIME THERE IS A REP ON THE PHONE. PLEASE DONT BE UPSET WITH THEM. THEY HAVE TRIFLING GHETTO LEADERSHIP BY PEOPLE WHO ARENT EVEN SMART ENOUGH TO FINISH A COLLEGE. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU EXPECT? FEEL SORRY FOR THEM AND HOPE THEY WISE UP AS I DID AND STOP WASTING THERE LIFE. IT IS TOO PRECIOUS TO WASTE AT VERIZON WIRELESS. IT DOES SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( I WILL FILL YOU ALL IN ON FMLA AT A LATER TIME)

To "Marie"

Ty | 21/02/2008, 22:55

WOW!!! Did you work in the Alpharetta, Georgia call center?
